Before Class

  1. Carefully clean and sponge ware.

  3. DAMP sponge ware to remove
     fired dust and to
    condition ware for decorating.
  4. Using the No. 8 Flat Opaque
or No. 10 Flat. base coat
Rooster with 2 coats of White.

In Class

  1. Check for missed base coated areas with isopropyl alcohol. Touch up any missed spots with White. Let dry. (See Stop 3 in Basic Information)
  2. Antique the entire piece with Brown. Use either the 3/4" Shader or the 1/2" Translucent.
  3. Wipe back with a soft cloth, leaving the Brown heavier in the recessed areas.
  4. Set aside to dry. (if desired, spray seal to further set color).
  5. Mix 1/4 tsp. of the following Translucents on the aluminum foil: Aqua, Blue, Green and Blue Purple. Add 1/8 tsp. of Gold Dust and mix thoroughly with a Palette Knife.
  6. Using the Shader and Angular Shader, begin to blend in the gold-tinted colors over the tail. Apply the colors, then wipe back with a soft cloth. Blend to achieve the color tone wanted. Final result should be a blue-green look with the dark antiquing color showing through.
  7. Add the green tone to the longer flight feathers on the wing. The darkest tone should be just below the white broad feathers.
  8. Blend Sienna over the body of the Rooster. Wipe the head and neck more, removing most of the Siena. The remaining parts of the body should be a very red brown. Do not apply the Siena over the blue-green tail and the wide shorter feathers on the wings,
  9. With a damp cotton swab, highlight the long back feathers by wiping back the Sienna. Also, wipe back the feathers between the comb and head. Check wide, short wing feathers for excess Sienna. If needed, remove more color, creating almost-white feathers.
  10. Place Red. Yellow and Green on a clean piece of foil.
  11. Using Round brush of choice, apply Yellow highlight to the neck area and long back feathers of choice. Blend color with cotton swab.
  12. Using the 1/2" Angular Shader, accent some of the long feathers with Green. Again, blend colors.
  13. Apply Green over the foliage at the base of Rooster. Wipe color back, creating light- and dark-
  14. grew highlights MW shadows. Remove Green from the feet, using a damp cotton swab,
  15. Mix 50/50 Yellow and Red, creating a mustard-like mixture. Apply this mixture to the beak and feet. Blend with soft cloth.
  16. Using either round brush apply Red smoothly to the comb wattle. Accent the tongue.
  17. Mix Yellow and Sienna on the foil, making a yellow brown. With this mix accent the green foliage. Again blend colors.
  18. Spray seal entire piece with 2 to 3 light coats of Porcelain.
  19. Place the following Bisq-Stain* Opaques on the foil covered palette: Gold, Black and White,
  20. With No. 2 Detail, apply 2 coats of Gold to iris of eye. Allow to dry.
  21. Paint pupil, using the No. 2 Detail loaded in Black.
  22. Add a tiny White highlight, using the No. 2 Detail.
  23. Apply high-Gloss Brash-On Sealer to the feet comb, wattle and eyes, using a soft brush.
